More than the adorable bonnets, the dainty headbands, or the buckets and baskets… these portraits are by far my MOST REQUESTED image for newborn photo sessions! And with very good reason! These “Baby Mug Shots,” as they are lovingly called, capture so many of the adorable, sweet, serious, and sometimes funny expressions that are so familiar to parents, but often happen far too quickly to ever be caught with a camera phone.
These classic expression photos are definitely a staple at Erin Elyse Photography! Keep reading to learn exactly what it is that makes them so incredibly popular and unique to any of the other portraits that I offer.
By all means, keep telling me how much you love them and that they are a must for your upcoming photoshoot, but no need to worry… I’m going to do them whether you mention it or not. Haha. Keep in mind, I always save these photos for the end of the session. So if we’ve made it halfway through your newborn portraits and you’re beginning to wonder if I’ve forgotten about them… I haven’t. It’s just all a part of my plan.
A huge part of what makes these images so timeless and classic is that they are only available in black and white. Do you typically prefer your photographs in color? Trust me. Even my clients who don’t usually gravitate towards black and white photos end up going gaga over these ones!
The purpose of these portraits is to focus on the details of your baby’s face. We want to see the way your newborn scrunches up his nose, the dimple in her cheek, how cute his face is mid sneeze… we do not want to be distracted by patterned backdrops or bear bonnets. As adorable as those items are, we’ll save them for the rest of the photo session.
For one, black and white portraits go well with any decor, so there is no need to worry about the possibility of clashing color schemes. Secondly, these expression images can obviously be displayed alone as a large piece of wall art, but also look incredible as a gallery wall grouping of 3, 4, or even 6 portraits! This means, that no matter how much wall space you have available, we can easily create the perfect way to showcase your baby’s beautiful portraits.
They also make the perfect addition to any baby milestone photoshoot! As previously mentioned, you can always create a fun gallery wall featuring “mug shots” from a single portrait session, but as an alternative, you could include one favorite image from each consecutive milestone session. For example, you could choose a newborn, 4 month, 8 month, and 1 year photograph for a gallery of four framed prints or canvases. There are truly so many options!
